NECO releases 2025 SSCE results: Here’s how to check your result
The National Examinations Council (NECO) has officially released the results of the 2025 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE), providing insight into candidate performance, subject outcomes, and examination integrity across the country.
The announcement was made on Tuesday in Minna, Niger State, by the Registrar and Chief Executive of NECO, Professor Ibrahim Wushishi, who described the outcome as a significant step forward in the council’s mission to deliver credible and standardised examinations for Nigerian students.
Number of Candidates and Subjects Written
According to Wushishi, the 2025 SSCE covered 16 examinable subjects and attracted 96,979 registered candidates nationwide. Of this number, 51,823 were male candidates, representing 53.43 per cent, while 45,156 were female, accounting for 46.56 per cent.
However, not all registered candidates eventually sat for the examination. NECO confirmed that 95,160 candidates took part in the exams, comprising 50,785 males (53.36 per cent) and 44,375 females (46.63 per cent).
Overall Performance and Credit Pass Statistics
The registrar disclosed that 73,167 candidates achieved credit passes and above, translating to 78.32 per cent of the 93,425 candidates whose results were fully processed.
Performance in Mathematics, one of the core compulsory subjects, was particularly strong. Out of 93,330 candidates who sat for the subject, 85,256 candidates, representing 91.35 per cent, earned credit passes or higher.
When it comes to the benchmark required for most tertiary admissions, 68,166 candidates (71.63 per cent) secured five credits and above, including English Language and Mathematics. Meanwhile, 82,082 candidates (86.26 per cent) obtained five credits and above, regardless of whether the two compulsory subjects were included.
Examination Malpractice and Sanctions
NECO also released figures related to examination misconduct. Wushishi revealed that 9,016 candidates were sanctioned for various forms of examination malpractice during the 2025 SSCE. This represents an increase of 2,856 cases compared to the 2024 examination cycle.
In addition to candidate sanctions, the council took disciplinary action against officials involved in malpractice. Five examination supervisors from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Kano, Adamawa, and Ondo states were blacklisted for allegedly aiding and abetting examination malpractice.
Furthermore, four examination centres located in Niger, Yobe, and Kano states have been recommended for de-recognition due to what NECO described as “mass involvement in malpractice.”
Importance of the SSCE
The SSCE remains a crucial qualification for candidates seeking admission into universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, and other tertiary institutions both within and outside Nigeria. It also offers students an opportunity to strengthen their academic records and improve future prospects.
Wushishi described the 2025 results as “another milestone” in NECO’s ongoing efforts to uphold examination standards and credibility.
Funding and Federal Support
The NECO registrar expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for continued support to the education sector. He also disclosed that the council is currently owed less than ₦2 billion by the 36 state governments, a figure he said reflects improved cooperation and accountability.
Examination and Marking Timeline
The 2025 SSCE was conducted between November 26 and December 13, 2025, while the marking exercise took place from January 5 to January 21, 2026, before the final release of results.
