Masemola urges unity within crime intelligence amid leadership shake-up

National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola has issued a firm call for unity, discipline, and renewed focus within the Crime Intelligence Division of the South African Police Service (SAPS).

During an official address on Thursday, 10 July, General Masemola introduced Major General Solomon Makgato as the newly appointed Acting Divisional Commissioner for Crime Intelligence. The appointment follows the arrest of former divisional head Dumisani Khumalo, who, along with six other officers, faces charges of fraud and corruption linked to the irregular appointment of an underqualified officer to a senior post.

In addition to Makgato’s appointment, several other acting senior managers were announced to stabilise leadership within the division. These moves come amid growing public concern and internal controversy following serious allegations of political interference and criminal infiltration within the SAPS, raised by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

Mkhwanazi’s claims include accusations against Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and other senior officials. President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to address the nation on these matters following his return from the BRICS Summit on Sunday, 13 July.

“Intelligence remains the bedrock upon which effective operational strategies are built. It is fundamental in identifying threats, dismantling criminal networks, and protecting our nation.”

Police spokesperson Nonkululeko Phokane reinforced this message, urging SAPS personnel to work collaboratively and uphold the division’s integrity.

“The stability of Crime Intelligence is essential for national security. Our focus must remain on our constitutional mandate—preventing, combating, and investigating crime.”

Masemola further warned against participation in smear campaigns or any actions that could undermine SAPS morale and public trust. He called on all senior officers to fully support Acting Commissioner Makgato and the newly appointed leadership team as they steer the division through this critical period.

As the nation awaits further developments and leadership responses, SAPS’ renewed focus on unity and accountability will be closely monitored by the public.
