Madlanga inquiry to begin public hearings on 17 September

Acting Deputy Chief Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga

The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry will commence public hearings on 17 September, launching a detailed probe into allegations of corruption, political interference and organised crime within South Africa’s criminal justice system.

The commission is chaired by retired acting deputy chief justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga. It had originally intended to start hearings on 1 September but was forced to postpone after the Department of Justice did not deliver the required logistical support and infrastructure in time.

In a statement, commission spokesperson Jeremy Michaels confirmed that the department has since awarded contracts for IT equipment and essential ICT infrastructure services. Michaels said appointed service providers have made significant progress in setting up systems and facilities to the commission’s requirements.

He added that, subject to the completion of the outstanding installations, the commission expects all preparations to be finalised so public hearings can proceed on 17 September without further delay.
