Lucas Ribeiro speaks out before FIFA – his heartfelt message to Sundown’s fans

Lucas Ribeiro waves goodbye to Mamelodi Sundowns after two unforgettable seasons in South African football.
Lucas Ribeiro Costa has announced his intention to part ways with Mamelodi Sundowns, delivering an emotional farewell message to supporters. While the Brazilian forward has publicly declared his departure, the matter remains clouded by an ongoing contractual dispute that could ultimately be settled by FIFA. The 26-year-old, who arrived in Tshwane during the 2023/24 season, has nevertheless left an indelible mark with his goals, assists, and memorable performances in the famous yellow shirt.
Ribeiro’s exit comes in the midst of a complicated transfer saga that has dominated headlines in recent weeks. Linked strongly with a move to Qatar SC and also courted by Brazilian side Fluminense, the skillful striker found himself at the center of a contractual dispute with Sundowns. Although Qatar SC reportedly presented him with a lucrative package, the South African champions were reluctant to let their star man leave, creating a stalemate that eventually escalated to FIFA.
Invoking the so-called “Diarra ruling”, Ribeiro argued that he should be free to join another club and obtain his international transfer certificate. However, legal experts have cast doubt on this interpretation, pointing out that the EU ruling does not apply globally and has no binding force in African football jurisdictions. Sundowns are expected to resist any move they deem irregular, which could complicate Ribeiro’s registration with a new club.
Despite the legal uncertainty, Ribeiro made his farewell to Masandawana supporters public via Instagram. In his heartfelt message, he reflected on his two-year spell in South Africa, describing his time at the club as “incredible” and thanking the fans for their unwavering passion.
“From the very first day I arrived, I gave my all, on and off the field, to earn my place and proudly defend Mamelodi Sundowns. These past two years have been incredible, full of emotions.
I have learned so much from this beautiful culture – not only to become a better player, but also a better human being.
To my wonderful Masandawana supporters, first of all, thank you for everything. I want you to know that your support and love meant so much to me, and I will never forget you.
I will always carry in my heart the memories of the emotions I lived, the goals, the assists, the trophies, and the magical nights with you that made me feel at home. I wish I could have said goodbye in a better way, but please know that my love for you is endless.
I am grateful to all the coaches who were part of this beautiful story – I will always appreciate each of you.
To my teammates, my second family, thank you for every battle, every title won, every smile, and every moment we shared together. You will always be my brothers, and I will miss you so much.
Playing for Sundowns and living this beautiful culture has been such a great honour for me. I will truly miss it. Thank you, South Africa. Thank you, Mamelodi Sundowns, for everything. With much love, Ribeiro #10.”
Ribeiro departs having made 88 appearances for Sundowns, scoring 37 goals and contributing 23 assists. His performances not only helped the club secure silverware but also earned him the prestigious PSL Footballer of the Season award.
Reports suggest that his next destination could be Spanish second division outfit CYD Leonesa, though the transfer remains subject to FIFA’s decision. Regardless of where he plays next, Ribeiro’s time with Sundowns will be remembered as one of flair, determination, and impact.
For the Masandawana faithful, his farewell marks the end of a brief yet golden chapter—one that underscored Sundowns’ status as a breeding ground for international talent while reminding supporters of football’s unpredictable nature.
