Two people were injured when a light aircraft crashed south of Thembalethu, George, on Saturday morning.
Herman Pieters, communications manager for the Garden Route District Municipality (GRDM), said the crash occurred around 11 am. “The emergency control centre was informed of the situation by the George Airport tower,” he explained.
Pieters added that the GRDM immediately activated fire and rescue services from both the municipality and GRDM, as well as the local police. “The landowner where the accident occurred had contacted Emergency Medical Services (EMS) directly,” he said.
“The pilot and passenger miraculously escaped with minor injuries,” Pieters confirmed. Both were treated on the scene by EMS before being transported to George Hospital for further care.
The GRDM spokesperson emphasised the importance of a coordinated emergency response. “This incident shows how quickly our teams and residents can act together in times of crisis,” he noted.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the crash. Residents are advised to avoid the area while emergency teams continue their work.
