Light aircraft crashes into Durban ocean – here’s what happened

Rescue and emergency teams wait on shore as a helicopter and NSRI boats search the sea for the missing pilot.
Emergency services and law enforcement have rushed to Suncoast Beach in Durban following a dramatic incident in which a light aircraft crashed into the ocean. The aircraft was reportedly taking part in a school exhibition display organised by the South African Civil Aviation Authority.
Eyewitnesses at the scene described the harrowing moment as the aircraft performed an aerial display before descending rapidly and hitting the surf just after 1pm. Videos capturing the crash have already circulated widely on social media, showing the aircraft’s sudden impact with the sea.

ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson confirmed that rescue teams, including the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), lifeguards, and paramedics, are actively responding. “Emergency personnel are standing by while divers and the NSRI work tirelessly to locate the pilot. The cause of the crash is still unknown, and no rescues have been made at this stage,” Jamieson said.
Suncoast Beach, located near Durban’s Virginia Airport, has become the focus of a large-scale search operation. SAPS helicopters have been deployed to transport divers to the crash site, with authorities urging the public to keep clear of the area to allow rescue efforts to continue without interruption.
The community remains in shock as emergency teams comb the waters, hoping for a safe outcome. Updates will follow as more information becomes available.
