Jurupa Valley wildfire expands to 400 acres — here is what to know

Jurupa Valley Pyrite Fire Erupts: 400 Acres Burned, Evacuations Ordered as Blaze Pushes Toward Fontana
Residents in parts of Jurupa Valley were ordered to evacuate Friday evening after a fast-moving brush fire swept through dry vegetation and spread rapidly toward neighboring areas.
The blaze, now known as the Pyrite Fire, was first reported around 5:20 p.m. near Pyrite Street and Granite Hill Drive, according to Cal Fire officials. Initially estimated at just 15 acres, fueled by dry grass and light brush, the fire quickly ballooned in size as gusty conditions fanned the flames.
By late Friday night, the fire had scorched roughly 400 acres and was only 5% contained. Fire crews deployed helicopters for aerial water drops while also using fire retardant to slow its advance.

Evacuations and Road Closures
Mandatory evacuations were announced shortly after the fire broke out and were later expanded as flames advanced. Authorities shared an evacuation zone map for affected neighborhoods, urging residents to leave immediately for safety.
The San Bernardino County Fire Department reported that the blaze was pushing toward Fontana, prompting local police to close Sierra Avenue from Jurupa Avenue to Armstrong Road. Officials stressed that Fontana homes were not directly threatened, though smoke was expected to impact visibility across the region.
