Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, will be observed across the United States on Wednesday, June 19, 2025. Officially recognised as a federal holiday since 2021, Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the U.S., specifically marking the day in 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce the freedom of enslaved African Americans—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

As Americans nationwide reflect on the historical importance of this day, it’s essential to know what will be open or closed, especially for those making personal, business, or travel plans.

What’s Closed on Juneteenth?

As a federal holiday, Juneteenth will see the closure of many government offices and financial institutions. This includes:

  • Post offices, federal buildings, and Social Security offices
  • Federal and state courts
  • Banks such as GTBank, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, CitiBank, and PNC will all close their physical branches. However, customers can still access online banking, ATMs, and mobile services.
  • Stock and bond markets (NYSE, Nasdaq) will also remain closed in observance of the holiday.

These closures reflect the national recognition of Juneteenth and the growing commitment to honouring African-American history and resilience.

What Will Remain Open?

Despite the federal observance, many sectors will continue normal operations. These include:

  • Retail outlets, supermarkets, and restaurants – Most major chains like Walmart, Target, and Kroger are expected to stay open with regular business hours.
  • Private delivery services – While USPS will not operate, UPS and FedEx will maintain standard pickup and delivery schedules.
  • Public transportation – Services such as buses and trains in many metropolitan areas will operate on their usual timetables, although some may run on holiday schedules.

Community Events and Celebrations

Juneteenth is more than a day off—it’s a moment of cultural reflection and celebration. Across the country, various communities will host parades, concerts, educational talks, festivals, and historical reenactments. Cities like Houston, Atlanta, Washington D.C., and Oakland are already preparing vibrant events to honour Black heritage and resilience.

If you plan to attend local events, it’s wise to check with city websites or social media pages for updated schedules and street closures.

The Deeper Meaning of Juneteenth

Juneteenth represents a powerful symbol of freedom, perseverance, and justice. It reminds us that liberation did not arrive overnight, and progress requires persistent effort. Although slavery was officially abolished with the 13th Amendment, the struggles for racial equality and justice continue.

By making Juneteenth a federal holiday, the United States acknowledges this part of its past while encouraging dialogue, learning, and unity for the future.

How to Observe Juneteenth

Here are ways you can honour Juneteenth:

  • Attend local cultural events and parades
  • Support Black-owned businesses
  • Take time to read or watch documentaries on African-American history
  • Donate to or volunteer with organisations committed to racial equity
  • Educate younger generations on the significance of this day
