Joshlin Smith: Police follow new tip-off in heartbreaking case

The Western Cape community has once again turned its focus to Saldanha Bay, as police intensify their search efforts following a fresh tip-off in the heartbreaking case of missing seven-year-old Joshlin Smith.
Yesterday, police descended on the Middelpos informal settlement, a site that has previously been central to the investigation. This time, the search forms part of a renewed push by the South African Police Service (SAPS) to uncover answers about Joshlin’s fate — a mystery that has haunted the nation since her disappearance earlier this year.

Despite the convictions in May of Joshlin’s mother, Kelly Smith, her boyfriend Jacquen Appollis, and their friend Steveno van Rhyn — all sentenced to life imprisonment plus ten years for kidnapping — the investigation into Joshlin’s whereabouts is far from over. The convicted trio has indicated their intention to appeal both the convictions and their sentences, but the SAPS has made it clear: finding Joshlin remains a top priority.
Brigadier Novela Potelwa, speaking on behalf of the SAPS, confirmed that detectives, K-9 units, local law enforcement, and search and rescue teams were actively involved in the operation. She emphasised the importance of following up on every possible lead, regardless of how much time has passed.
“We have an obligation to follow up and test all information brought to our attention,”
For the families, residents of Saldanha Bay, and indeed many across South Africa, this case has become a symbol of both injustice and resilience. The community’s pain is palpable, but so too is the determination of those seeking answers.
As search teams navigate the Middelpos terrain, the police have asked the public and media to give them the space and support needed to conduct their work thoroughly. “Our efforts are earnest and ongoing,” said Brigadier Potelwa, adding a heartfelt plea for understanding during what is an emotionally charged operation.
The uncertainty remains heavy — will this latest lead bring the breakthrough everyone hopes for? That question lingers over Saldanha Bay, mingling with a collective desire for closure and justice.
For now, the search continues. And with it, the hope that somewhere out there, Joshlin’s story might still find its ending.
Anyone with credible information is urged to come forward. Let’s keep the light burning for Joshlin.
