 National grid collapses again… any solution?

Nigerians were thrown into darkness over the collapse of National Grid on Wednesday.  Like the “darkness was upon the face the earth”quote, the country experienced total blackout.

This Day reports that the grid collapsed on the same day the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, assured Nigerians that the country’s power grid would achieve significant stability with the completion of phase one of the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI), also known as the Siemens project.

Punch reports that from January 2024 till November, the grid has collapsed 11 times.



In October, the girl collapsed three times within one week sparking reactions from Nigerians.

A tweet via the official handle of Nigeria’s National Grid confirmed that the grid collapsed at about 2:09 pm yesterday.

While Reuters reported that distribution companies across Nigeria, also known as Discos, said in separate statements that the grid had failed at around 12:33 GMT and they hoped electricity would be restored soon.



Meanwhile the data from the Transmission Company of Nigeria showed electricity generation plunged from 3,087 megawatt before the grid collapse, to zero as of 1400 GMT according to Reuters report.

This year, a total of 12 historic gird collapse has been recorded. The question on the lips of Nigerians have been , ” Is there a solution to the gird collapse problem in Nigeria?”

Jos , Ikeja , Eko and Abuja Disco head of communication have all taken to their twitter handle to inform valued customers about the collapse and ensure them that they are working to salvage the situation.

However, the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, has promised that work is going on within the power sector to see to the stability of power supply.

After a closed-door meeting with German officials during the visit of German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier to the State House, Abuja on energy patnership, Chief Adelabusays that significant professes are being recorded as 10 power transformers and 10 mobile substations have been imported, installed, and mostly inaugurated, adding 750 megawatts to the transmission of the grid’s capacity.

Nigerians are eagerly hoping that the situation get addressed as promised by the minister.
