Graham Howes missing at sea — latest search update

A large-scale operation is underway to locate experienced kite surfer Graham Howes, 38, who failed to return after a Sunday afternoon session off Eden on the Bay, Bloubergstrand.

Family members reported him missing when he did not come home as expected. Security camera footage from local patrols shows Howes around 1pm wearing a black wetsuit and riding a blue-and-black kiteboard beneath a white kite with red lettering.

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) confirmed the Melkbosstrand duty crew launched the rescue craft Rotary’s Gift shortly after receiving the alert. NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said shoreline patrols began immediately while additional rescue teams and volunteers mobilised to support the effort.

Search planners are using grid patterns that incorporate real-time wind, weather, and ocean-current data. The primary focus extends from Eden on the Bay northwest toward Robben Island, past Bokpunt, and up the West Coast between Yzerfontein and Dassen Island, with areas widened as conditions evolve.

Lambinon noted that Howes is a highly capable kiteboarder but stressed that sea conditions can change quickly. “Every available resource is being deployed as we work methodically through our search areas,” he said.

Air assets, rescue craft, and ground crews are coordinating closely, sharing sightings and GPS tracks to eliminate sectors and refine the next phases. Shoreline teams are also checking access points, reefs, and beaches for any equipment or clothing that could aid investigators.

The NSRI is appealing to residents, beachgoers, and all maritime traffic operating from Bloubergstrand along the West Coast to maintain a vigilant lookout and to report any information immediately.

Search operations will continue as teams adjust to changing conditions and incoming leads. Authorities have asked the public to avoid speculation and to rely on official updates as the effort progresses.
