Gauteng Department of Education (GDE)

The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) officially launched its 2026 online admission system for Grade 1 and Grade 8 on Thursday, 25 July 2025. Parents and guardians across the province can now apply to secure space for their children in public schools through the streamlined online platform.

Applications Now Open for Grade 1 and 8 Learners

According to Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane, the online application window will remain open until 12 August 2025. The system covers all public primary and high schools in Gauteng, allowing for efficient placement and early preparation for the 2026 academic year.

Chiloane emphasized the importance of applying early, saying, “We encourage all parents to use the system as early as possible to avoid last-minute challenges and delays.”

How the GDE Online System Works

To apply, parents must visit the official GDE admissions website and register using their personal details. Once registered, they can complete applications for up to five schools per child.

The system offers placement based on home address, sibling attendance, school feeder zones, and availability of space. Supporting documents must be uploaded online or submitted at selected schools within seven days of applying.

Key Dates and Deadlines

  • Application Window: 25 July – 12 August 2025
  • Placement Period: Starting from 16 September 2025
  • Document Submission Deadline: Within 7 days of application

Parents are urged to keep an eye on SMS notifications and email updates for placement outcomes once the selection period begins.

Parents Encouraged to Use Digital Services

The GDE’s digital platform continues to improve in speed, accessibility, and efficiency. MEC Chiloane noted that walk-in centres and local libraries will offer assistance for parents who don’t have access to internet services or devices.

In previous years, over 800,000 applications were processed through the GDE’s digital platform, reflecting a shift toward streamlined educational service delivery in the province.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Applying

To ensure smooth processing, parents should:

  • Use a valid South African ID or asylum document
  • Ensure all details (learner’s name, parent’s contact, etc.) are accurate
  • Upload documents promptly and to the correct school
  • Avoid duplicate applications

Failure to follow proper steps may lead to application rejection or delays in placement.

MEC Assures Enough Space and Transparency

Chiloane assured parents that Gauteng schools are ready to handle the demand and promised transparency throughout the process. “Our schools are prepared to absorb all qualifying learners. No child will be left behind due to system inefficiencies,” he said during the launch briefing.

With applications now live, the GDE’s 2026 online admission system is designed to make school placement easier, fairer, and more efficient. Parents are encouraged to act quickly and carefully to secure their children’s spots in Gauteng’s public schools. For full access to the application portal, visit gdeadmissions.gov.za.
