The devastating flood that happened in September, following the breach of the Alau Dam in Maiduguri, displaced over 400,000 persons while 30 persons were reportedly killed.
The office of the technical assistant to the chairman, represented by Benedicta, led the FIRS team delegated for the visitation. In a statement captured by the media, she sends the commission’s sympathetic message to the victims and expresses the concern the chairman has for them.
She said, “On behalf of the Chairman of the FIRS, Dr. Zach Adedeji, I want to extend our heartfelt sympathy to the government and people of Borno State for the flood disaster. Originally, we had planned to come earlier, but we delayed due to the busy nature of our job.
The flood disaster has caused significant damage, displacing many families and destroying properties. As we went round to select and encourage the beneficiaries, we saw for ourselves, firsthand, the devastating impact this has had on the people. We know the state government and other well-meaning individuals and organisations are working hard to provide aid for the victims; the FIRS also deemed it fit to support their efforts.”
She further revealed that it was the chairman’s support that made the visit possible, stating how they have also reached out to youths in the South-West, empowering them in poultry farming under the chairman’s administration. She notes that the acts are in line with Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for Nigerians, and the commission is happy to be part of the movement.
Speaking on behalf of the BROJ-F foundation, Dr. Uzee Usman, a Nollywood filmmaker and actor, expressed gratitude to the commission, appreciating their partnership and the opportunity to reach out to the less privileged.
One of the beneficiaries, Usman Mohammed, who spoke on behalf of the flood victims, expressed his gratitude to the commission for reaching out to them. He also used the avenue to call on well-meaning Nigerians to support and help them. According to him, the flood victims are really suffering.
Meanwhile, in another development, the FIRS has made a call for recruitment of qualified individuals for some of its vacant positions in the commission.
