The 2026 Primetime Emmy Awards nominations have arrived, and they are already reshaping this year’s television awards race. HBO Max’s “The Pitt” emerged as the biggest winner with 25 nominations, while “Hacks” made Emmy history by earning 24 nominations, setting a new record for the most nominations ever received by a comedy series in a single season.

Apple TV+’s breakout horror-comedy “Widow’s Bay” stunned industry watchers with 19 nominations, proving that genre television can compete with traditional Emmy favourites. Alongside the celebrations came a wave of unexpected omissions, including “Stranger Things,” Sydney Sweeney, Jeremy Allen White, Selena Gomez and several fan-favourite performances that failed to make the final ballot.

With the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards scheduled for September 14, this year’s nominations have already sparked intense debate across Hollywood.

The Pitt dominates the 2026 Emmy nominations

Medical drama “The Pitt” became the most nominated television series of the year after collecting 25 Emmy nominations for its acclaimed second season.

The HBO Max hit secured nominations across nearly every major category, including Outstanding Drama Series, acting races for Noah Wyle, multiple supporting performances and guest acting categories. The show’s remarkable performance nearly doubled its nomination haul from its debut season, cementing it as this year’s awards frontrunner.

Among its biggest surprises were guest performers Brittany Allen and Jeff Kober, both of whom secured nominations after independently campaigning for Emmy consideration.

Hacks sets a historic comedy record

Comedy favorite “Hacks” delivered one of the biggest stories of nomination morning.

The acclaimed HBO Max series earned 24 nominations, breaking the Emmy record for the most nominations received by a comedy series in a single season.

The final season once again received recognition for stars Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder, while also dominating directing, writing and guest acting categories.

The achievement further strengthens “Hacks” as the clear favorite heading into September’s ceremony.

Widow’s Bay becomes the year’s breakout success

Perhaps no show exceeded expectations more than Apple TV+’s “Widow’s Bay.”

Premiering only in late April, the horror-comedy overcame concerns about its late release to collect an impressive 19 Emmy nominations.

The series earned recognition in major comedy categories, acting races, directing and writing, making it one of the biggest breakthrough stories of this year’s awards.

Its success signals growing Emmy recognition for horror-inspired storytelling, a genre that has historically struggled for major awards attention.

Biggest Emmy snubs shock fans

As always, the nominations produced several surprising omissions.

Netflix’s “Stranger Things” failed to secure a nomination for Outstanding Drama Series, despite its final season receiving multiple technical nominations. Even more surprising, the show’s main cast was completely shut out of the major acting races.

Another headline-grabbing omission was Sydney Sweeney, who missed out on a nomination for “Euphoria.” While Zendaya and guest actor nominee Colman Domingo earned recognition, much of the ensemble cast, including previously nominated performers,  overlooked.

Former Emmy winner Jeremy Allen White also failed to receive a nomination for “The Bear.” Although the acclaimed comedy remained in contention for Outstanding Comedy Series and Ayo Edebiri secured another acting nomination, much of the show’s award-winning cast was absent from the acting categories.

Singer and actress Selena Gomez was also left out of the Lead Comedy Actress race for “Only Murders in the Building,” despite receiving recognition as an executive producer on the series.

Other notable snubs included Paul Anthony Kelly for Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette, Jamie Bell for Half Man, Ashley Padilla for Saturday Night Live, Taylor Sheridan, Jon Hamm, Kristen Bell, Adam Brody, Cailee Spaeny and the acclaimed cast of “Industry,” which once again went home without a single Emmy nomination.

Surprise nominees steal the spotlight

While several favourites were overlooked, the nominations also celebrated a number of unexpected contenders.

One of the biggest surprises was Chase Infiniti, who received her first-ever Emmy nomination for her leading role in “The Testaments.”

Marvel also returned to the Emmy acting conversation thanks to Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, whose performance in “Wonder Man” earned the franchise its first major acting nomination since WandaVision.

Reality television also experienced a shake-up.

“Dancing With the Stars” secured its first nomination in the Outstanding Reality Competition Program category in a decade, edging out longtime contender “The Amazing Race.” Meanwhile, Bravo’s “Summer House” celebrated its first nomination in the Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program category.

Another unexpected achievement came from Ariana Madix, who received a nomination as host of “Love Island USA,” reflecting the show’s growing popularity.

First-time nominees make their mark

The 2026 Emmy nominations also introduced several fresh faces to television’s biggest awards.

Among the notable first-time nominees were Chase Infiniti, Brittany Allen, Jeff Kober and several performers from “The Pitt,” highlighting a new generation of television talent.

Their recognition reflects the Television Academy’s willingness to reward standout performances from newer stars alongside established Emmy veterans.

Emmy race heads toward a highly competitive ceremony

With record-breaking nominations, unexpected snubs and breakout newcomers, the 2026 Emmy Awards are shaping up to be one of the most competitive ceremonies in recent memory.

“The Pitt” enters the race as the overall frontrunner, while “Hacks” has already secured its place in Emmy history. At the same time, “Widow’s Bay” has emerged as the year’s biggest surprise, proving that fresh storytelling can quickly become an awards-season powerhouse.

As voting continues ahead of the September 14 ceremony, the conversations surrounding this year’s biggest snubs and surprise nominees are likely to remain at the center of Hollywood’s awards season.
