Drop Yul’s name, nothing special about Edochie – Esther Sky advises May

May Edochie becomes a trending topic as Esther Sky asks her to drop Yul Edochie’s name amid their divorce.

Nollywood actress Esther Sky (Esther Nwachukwu) has caused a stir online by cautioning May Edochie to officially drop Yul Edochie’s surname and return the house she formerly shared with him.

In a video that recently went viral, Sky urged May to reclaim her independence by letting go of Yul’s name and tangible assets, arguing the gestures would symbolise closure and maturity.

In the clip, Esther highlighted the mansion May now occupies, contrasting it with the last home she shared with Yul. She implored: “Since you have your own mansion, there’s no reason to continue bearing Yul’s name or holding onto property that signifies a bygone chapter.”

The actress maintained that renouncing the surname and relinquishing the house would aid May’s emotional healing and establish firm boundaries.

Public reaction to her message has been mixed. Some users applauded Sky, believing May should sever symbolic ties and forge a fresh identity. Others criticised the remark as unsolicited interference, accusing Sky of prying into a private divorce settlement.

Comments ranged from supportive, urging accountability, to dismissive, labelling the public direction as “nuisance” and “low‑budget” theatrics.

Context: The Wider Edochie Divorce Drama

The backdrop to this drama is the high-profile divorce saga between Yul and May Edochie, which formally began in August 2023 after May accused Yul of infidelity and sought ₦100 million in damages, stemming from his relationship with actress Judy Austin.

The split attracted immense media attention, especially after Yul publicly requested that May drop his surname and return the bride price—further fuelling the debate over titles, property, and identity in modern Nigerian celebrity culture.

While legal proceedings continue, Esther Sky’s statement adds a new layer of commentary: the importance of symbolic separations and personal reinvention. Her call reflects the ongoing tension between public opinion, personal agency, and cultural expectations within Nigerian elite circles.
