It specifically mentioned recipients of both the core SASSA grants and the R350 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant, fueling anxiety among millions who rely on these payments for daily survival.



However, fact-checkers and official sources have debunked the graphic as false information. The image in circulation was quickly marked as “FAKE,” with no corroboration from SASSA’s verified communication platforms, such as its website, official social media pages, or trusted government announcements.

The misinformation was made to look authentic, using SASSA branding and official-sounding language to appear credible. It stated that “missing information could stop your SASSA payment” and that users of Capitec and TymeBank specifically were at risk. But crucial red flags were present. There was no source link to an official SASSA update, and the notice lacked proper formatting typical of government communication. More importantly, SASSA has not released any directive requiring grant recipients to reconfirm banking details by the stated deadline.

SASSA’s Official Response

SASSA has since addressed the situation, urging beneficiaries not to panic and to disregard the viral message. The agency reiterated that all legitimate updates or changes to beneficiary requirements will be shared only via their official website, verified social media handles, and through established communication channels.

But reacting, SASSA said:

SASSA urges all beneficiaries and members of the public to disregard the false information shown below. The content did not originate from SASSA and is completely misleading. Always rely on SASSA’s official platforms for accurate and verified updates.
