Deputy minister Njabulo Nzuza condemns Germiston Home Affairs fire in SA

South Africa’s Germiston Home Affairs office on fire
Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Njabulo Nzuza has strongly condemned the recent fire at the department’s Germiston office, describing the act as “barbaric” and affirming that those responsible will be held accountable.
Two individuals arrested in connection with the incident appeared in Germiston Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, facing charges including arson, property damage, and public violence.

In an interview with SABC, Nzuza emphasised the importance of peaceful protest, stating
“Our constitution protects the right to protest, but violence cannot be justified. Actions like this undermine the rights of others and will not go unpunished. This serves as a clear warning that destroying government property carries serious consequences.”
Authorities are working closely with law enforcement to ensure all necessary information is provided to support the ongoing investigation.
The fire has also raised concerns about disruptions to public services, with over 500 individuals now required to seek home affairs services at alternative locations. Pending applications have been delayed, affecting individuals who require essential documents for banking, social welfare, school enrollment, or university admissions.
“These delays impact real people in their everyday lives,” Nzuza added. “No one benefits from this, and those responsible must face justice.”
To reduce service interruptions, the department has launched a mobile office at the Germiston Civic Centre while repairs and restoration continue at the damaged site.
