Authorities are currently investigating a powerful explosion that rocked Mahoro Street in Thokoza on Monday afternoon, leaving a cash-in-transit vehicle destroyed and multiple homes damaged.

Emergency services, including specialised bomb disposal units, responded swiftly to the scene following the blast. Law enforcement has cordoned off the entire area, urging residents to keep a safe distance while officials carry out a detailed sweep for any further explosives.

The explosion, which completely destroyed a G4S cash van, caused significant structural damage to nearby properties. Blown-out windows, shattered glass and roofing debris now litter the surrounding area. The boundary wall of Umzamo Primary School was also impacted by the force of the blast.

Local residents reported hearing a series of explosions – as many as four – followed by what some described as the sound of gunfire. Despite the chaos, no injuries or arrests have been confirmed at this time.

Mahoro Street remains closed to traffic as police and the bomb squad continue their investigations. Officials are yet to release further details regarding the cause of the explosion or the possible suspects involved in what appears to be a cash-in-transit heist.
