Before you graduate: Top skills every undergraduate must learn
Skills for undergraduates
The worst thing that can happen to a student is graduating without a relevant skill. Considering the high rate of unemployment in Nigeria today, it is of utmost importance for every undergraduate to use the little time available while still in school to learn one or two soft skills that will be useful after graduation.
Initially, it was a thoughtful idea to learn a hand skill before entering higher institutions. However, with current realities, many students now write JAMB while still in secondary school and proceed straight into tertiary institutions without acquiring any formal skill. In such situations, it is advisable for students to learn soft or digital skills while in school. These skills will help them remain relevant and employable after graduation.
Below are some skills students can learn while in school:
1. Graphic Design:
Graphic design has become one of the most popular skills students rush into today. It is a creative discipline that involves visual communication of ideas, messages, and information through typography, images, colours, and layout. Almost everything we see around us involves graphic design—POS signboards, bank logos, billboards, book covers, identity cards, and more. Businesses and individuals constantly need designs for advertising, promotions, birthday flyers, wedding flyers, sales flyers, and other purposes. Graphic design is relatively easy to learn and does not consume much time if approached with dedication. It is currently one of the most in-demand skills in the business world.
2. Content Writing:
Content writing is another skill that pays well these days. Many people create content but lack the creativity to generate engaging ideas that will grow their platforms and keep their audience interested. As a student and a literate individual, you should train your mind to craft compelling write-ups that inform, engage, and sell.
3. Video Editing:
With the rise of content creation, video editing has become a highly valuable skill. While many people edit their videos themselves, skilled editors who can think outside the box and improve visual appeal are in high demand. To stand out, you must master your craft and deliver quality work. Many individuals and companies are constantly searching for professional video editors to handle their advertising and marketing content.
You must be good at what you do to attract high-paying clients.
4. Blogging:
You don’t have to be a professional writer to start blogging. As long as you have a message and can express it in a way people can understand, you are good to go. Create valuable content—whether comic, inspirational, motivational, informative, or news-related—that will keep readers coming back to your blog.
5. Search Engine Marketing (SEM):
Search Engine Marketing involves promoting content or products on search engines like Google through paid advertisements. Students can learn how businesses attract customers online and use this skill to promote blogs, small businesses, or even school projects.
6. Content Marketing:
Content marketing focuses on creating useful materials such as articles, videos, and social media posts to attract and educate audiences. It helps students improve their creativity, writing, and communication skills while building an online presence or personal brand.
7. Data Analytics:
Data analytics is the process of collecting and analysing data to identify patterns and make informed decisions. This skill helps students interpret information, understand audience behaviour, and make smarter decisions—useful both academically and professionally.
8. Mobile Marketing:
Mobile marketing targets users through smartphones using SMS, mobile apps, or mobile-friendly advertisements. Since most people rely heavily on their phones, students can learn how to effectively reach audiences using modern digital tools.
9. Email Marketing:
Email marketing involves sending messages or newsletters to inform, educate, or promote products and ideas. It teaches professional communication skills and can be used to manage small online projects or promote personal initiatives.
10. Social Selling:
Social selling uses social media platforms to build relationships, gain trust, and promote products or ideas. Students learn networking skills and how to responsibly use social media for business and career development.
11. Pay-Per-Click (PPC) Marketing:
PPC marketing is a form of online advertising where advertisers pay only when someone clicks on their ad. It teaches budgeting, strategic thinking, and how online advertising works—key skills for digital marketing careers.
These skills are not limited to the ones listed above. There are many other skills students can explore to remain prepared for the future and, most importantly, for the realities of our country. As a student, you should continually seek opportunities to learn, improve, and adapt.
