Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, alongside former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, visited the family of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday morning to pay their respects and offer condolences.
The trio arrived at Buhari’s residence in Daura, Katsina State, where they met with members of the bereaved family. During the visit, Peter Obi was seen consoling Buhari’s daughters, while Atiku Abubakar and El-Rufai proceeded to the former president’s graveside to offer prayers.
Former President Muhammadu Buhari passed away on Sunday in London after battling an undisclosed illness. He was laid to rest on Tuesday at his family compound in Daura according to Islamic rites.
Speaking to journalists at the burial, Katsina State Governor, Dikko Umar Radda, shared personal reflections on his interactions with the late president following his departure from office in 2023. Governor Radda noted that during Buhari’s post-presidency years in Daura, he had frequent discussions with him about national matters.
According to Radda, Buhari often emphasized the challenges of leadership in Nigeria. “He would tell me, ‘Your Excellency, do your best and be honest as a leader. You cannot satisfy Nigerians; only God can do that,’” Radda recounted.
The governor also described Buhari as a lighthearted and jovial figure, saying: “He always made me laugh during our meetings. He once said he suffered a lot as president, but now felt a sense of freedom and relief.”
The visit by prominent political figures highlights the national significance of Buhari’s legacy and the respect accorded to him across Nigeria’s political landscape.
