Asset seizure at PRASA applauded by parliamentarian

The recent seizure of devices belonging to senior executives at the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) has been welcomed by Rikus Badenhorst, Chairperson of the Select Committee on Public Infrastructure and Minister in the Presidency.
Badenhorst stated that the Hawks’ actions form part of an ongoing investigation into alleged irregularities at PRASA. He expressed deep concern over the allegations, noting that those implicated occupy high-level executive positions within the organisation.
“This development underscores the urgent need for transparency and accountability at PRASA,” Badenhorst said. “The committee will continue to monitor the situation closely, as it is vital that any corruption within the agency is fully exposed and addressed.”
During a committee session held on 9 July 2025, attention was drawn to a company recently awarded a major signalling contract—reportedly the same entity responsible for the demolition of Parliament. The committee voiced strong concerns about this company’s recurring role in major public projects.
Badenhorst also urged the Minister of Transport to brief the committee once the investigation concludes, emphasising the importance of resolving long-standing issues that have hindered progress on PRASA’s signalling infrastructure.
“Reports indicate that the executives and Board awarded an R18 billion train signalling contract to companies without adhering to mandatory procurement requirements. This raises serious questions about the proper use of public funds—particularly at a time when the country’s finances are under immense pressure.”
The committee reaffirmed its commitment to rigorous oversight to ensure that public resources are managed responsibly and in the public interest.
