1. Born on 13 June 1942 in Minna, Niger State

General Abdulsalami Abubakar was born in Minna, now the capital of Niger State. His early education began at the Native Authority Primary School in Minna before he proceeded to Government College, Bida and later Kaduna Technical College.

2. Started in the Air Force, then joined the Army

In 1963, he joined the newly formed Nigerian Air Force as one of its pioneer officer cadets and trained in Germany. By 1966, he transferred to the Nigerian Army, where he was commissioned as a second lieutenant, beginning a distinguished military career.

3. UN Peacekeeping Mission in Lebanon (1978–1979)

Abubakar led Nigeria’s contingent in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, reflecting Nigeria’s active participation in international peacekeeping and his leadership credentials on the global stage.



4. Appointed Chief of Defence Staff in 1997

Before becoming Head of State, he was appointed Chief of Defence Staff, a position that placed him at the core of Nigeria’s military leadership at a volatile time in the nation’s history.

5. Became Head of State After Abacha’s Death in 1998

Following the sudden death of General Sani Abacha on 8 June 1998, Abubakar emerged as Nigeria’s Head of State on 9 June. His calm demeanour and inclusive approach were seen as a stabilising force at a critical moment.

6. Spearheaded Nigeria’s Return to Democracy in 1999
