The National Examinations Council (NECO) has officially released the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results for 179,201 candidates and scheduled resit exams for English Studies and Mathematics on July 23–24 for students who fell short in these core subjects.

BECE Results Released: 179,201 Candidates Graded

NECO confirmed that a total of 179,201 candidates registered for the 2025 BECE, taken between May 12 and May 23 across 12 core subjects 1. The results were released following the BECE Award Committee meeting held at the Council’s Minna headquarters, which included senior NECO officials, state education representatives, and school leaders.

Dr. Folake Olatunji David, Chair of the Award Committee and Director of Basic Education at the Federal Ministry of Education, emphasized the integrity and transparency of the examination and result collation process.

Resits Scheduled, English Studies & Mathematics Only

For candidates who failed to meet the pass mark in core subjects, NECO has announced the resit timetable. The resits are scheduled for July 23 and 24, 2025, covering only English Studies and Mathematics.

Acting NECO spokesperson Azeez Sani urged affected students and their schools to prepare thoroughly, check their results on the NECO portal, and register for the resit examinations in due course.

Why the Resits Matter: Transition to Senior Secondary School

The BECE is a crucial milestone marking completion of junior secondary education and qualification for entry into senior secondary school. By limiting resits to English and Mathematics, NECO emphasizes the importance of competency in these foundational subjects for further academic success.

The resit opportunity demonstrates NECO’s commitment to ensuring that students who narrowly miss the cut have a pathway to continue their education, rather than being shut out after one attempt.
