17-year-old student dies after alleged bullying in Yobe school

A 17-year-old student, Hassan Amadu, of Government Science and Technical College, Potiskum, Yobe state, has reportedly died following an alleged bullying incident involving fellow students.
The incident occurred on Sunday at the school located in Potiskum Local Government Area of the state. Hassan, a Senior Secondary School Three (SS3) student, was said to have been attacked by some of his classmates under circumstances that are yet to be fully clarified.
A family source disclosed that the deceased was buried the same day in his hometown, Gadaka, in Fika Local Government Area of Yobe State.
Confirming the incident, the Yobe State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, told Punch correspondent that the police had commenced an investigation into the matter.
“Yes, we are aware of the incident, and an investigation is currently ongoing to ascertain what led to the death of the student,” he said.
A teacher of the school, who spoke on condition of anonymity, alleged that Hassan had been subjected to persistent bullying by some students.
According to the teacher, the victim confronted the students on Sunday and asked them to stop, but they allegedly refused and attacked him.
“They beat him badly, and he later died,” the teacher said.
The teacher added that following the incident, the school authorities handed over the students suspected to be involved in the attack to the police for further investigation.
According to the teacher, authorities have assured that a thorough investigation will be carried out to establish the facts surrounding the incident and ensure that those found responsible are held accountable.
